Clearly, the founding fathers intended the nation to be characterized by the values of fairness, justice, equality, freedom from oppression, freedom for self-determination, respect for humanity, collective action for the common good, and empathy. Based on the collective actions, executive orders, policies, and the budget reconciliation bill, the national character is transformed into favoritism, bias, unequal distribution of burdens and benefits, disrespect, prejudice, freedom for the privileged, and exploitation for extreme self-interest and collective narcissism. Thank you for your clear, compelling, unadulterated commentary on the founding of our nation.

A clearer picture of Trump and the GOP’s failures could not be made. Thank you, judge Luttig!

During Trump’s last term, we documented all his abuses during his first year. This is not new, he’s just gotten more frantic and desperate as his time in this planet to celebrate his sins is sorely limited:

It will be as it ever was. He’s playing with fire and he’s going to get burned. Hopefully it will be informative to Americans, and not our downfall from embarrassment and inaction. There will be a call to vote and to arms. Be prepared.

We need a new gathering of our most articulate voices to have a meeting/convention to reaffirm, modify, enhance our constitution in the face of this corruption of our democracy. Judge Michael Luttig should be the guiding chair of this crucial endeavor. I suggest such voices as Pete Buddegiege, Elissa Slotkin, senator Murphy, AOC, Jasmine Crockett, Cory Booker, Bedo O’Rourke, Gov. Pritzker and others who speak to our country’s need.

I also vehemently agree! Retired and former Republicans, modern leaders of moral authority and Patriots from every-day American life who adhere to the principles of the Declaration of Independence and the Consitution as well as some of those you have listed should hold a national "Consultation of the Declaration of Independence and United States Constitution" as we embark on the 250th anniversary of our country. As a limited series, it could be used to substantively refamiliarize all citizens with our founding documents, their roots in opposing tyranny, key progress that has been made and the need to reaffirm our commitment to the principles in the documents.

Thank you Judge Lettig. I really appreciated the summary of the Constitution. I do not understand how the current Supreme Court can allow the president to violate the law and not be held responsible. A simple decision and our society of laws is overthrown. It is bad now, and will only get worse.

I read the posting by Judge Luttig and at each section I was struck by the state of the SCOTUS. I know Republicans serving in government have disregarded the oath they swore upon taking office, but that the purported highest level of law has been politically corrupted is astounding. I am not a lawyer, only the mother of one, and it is clear to me the majority members of the Supreme Court have a compromised view.

I have sent Judge Luttig’s post to many friends and family and also subscribed to the Substack account for Judge Luttig.

Only a few days ago, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson's dissent - "The Founders of the United States of America squarely rejected a governing system in which the King ruled all and all others, including the courts were his subordinates. In our Constitution-centered system, the People are the rulers and we have rule of law.." - until we don't

For many years, we have paid far too little attention to nominations to the Supreme Court. Imagine how differently we might be situated now if Judge Luttig had been the Chief Justice for the past fifteen years, instead of the puppet of Putin’s puppet.

Thank you, Judge Luttig, for these clear associations of what is happening today to occurrences prior to July 4, 1776. May it open eyes and hearts to stand up and speak out against the tyrannical administration of Donald Trump.

Praying that the Judge remains in the "town square" and his voice doesnt fade ... his sane wisdom, integrity, and character - with the power enumerated thru and by - are more essential by our modern American citizenry with every tick of the clock. Thank you Judge. And thank you Ryan for "some nudging" - keep nudging please.

I read this last night after hearing you with Ryan Lizza, Judge Luttig. What a profound commentary. I have read it several times more times, and will most definitely read it tomorrow. I have also passed it along to others. Excitement is not the word when I heard you are joining Substack! Thank you again for your wisdom and calmness. You are a treasure. Happy Fourth of July! And, than you Ryan, for convincing the Judge to join!!

Today is the Fourth of July . A holiday that I used to enjoy, decorated fully and celebrated proudly.

I could not be more ashamed of our present government than I am in this moment.

This is the darkest moment in the history of our country as the Christian nationalist fascist 2025 plan architects are aggressively collapsing our democracy because they deemed that it and our constitution should no longer exist.

The alt right Republicans fascist authoritarians say they fly our flag upside down ( including at the home of one of our Supreme Court justices Samuel Alito ) to indicate “ crisis”. They think and believe

Humanity, empathy and compassion for all

Safety nets for people to live in dignity

Freedom of speech

Justice and equality for all

Fairness for all

Acceptance of all

Freedom for all

Having a “diverse fabric” in our society

No systemic misogyny

No racism

No antisemitism

No bigotry

Wanting reasonable gun control legislation

Wanting good healthcare for all

Having norms of decency, civility, honesty

prevents THEM from being free and means our country is in CRISIS thus they fly our flag upside down?!!!!!

All of us fighting to save our democracy and our constitution as intended by our founding fathers with

3 equal branches of government

All of our EQUAL rights

Freedom of speech

Absolute separation of church and state

The 14th amendment which was properly ratified and became part of our constitution ensuring birthright citizenship is now being ABOLISHED by the stroke of a pen by an individual president abusing the power of “executive orders”.

It must be pointed out here that we actually have a “person” sitting in the oval office that talks about, jokes about inflicting the most inhumane, brutal treatment on human beings.

That he laughs and jokes about with great glee , with the people around him, the possibility of poor immigrants or political opponents, getting eaten by alligators. He relishes in the thought of an another human being on this earth getting eaten by an alligator or being overtaken by poisonous snakes .

It is the dark darkest of dark and incredibly sick.

All of us standing together putting country before party standing up to unbridled lawlessness corruption and inhumane brutality in this fascist authoritarian takeover……..

Maybe WE should be the ones to fly our flags upside down on the Fourth of July as we are in a real huge constitutional crisis and our democracy rights and freedoms have never been more threatened in the history of the United States of America.

Justice and equality are two sides of the same coin.

What is there to celebrate?

We are NO LONGER the land of the FREE.

We are no longer the country that HELPS others or our own American people .

But we certainly are still home of the BRAVE as evidenced by the millions that came out for the “No Kings “ peaceful protests” . The power is still with the people

WE THE PEOPLE!!!

We must never forget that we are the ones on the right side of history and what is right.
