Yesterday, Telos News published its first big investigative piece: “Devin Nunes, Steven Biss, and the Laptop of MAGA Secrets.”
I know it’s long, but much of the payoff is at the end, so I hope you can find the time to read it all.
But if you’re like me, you probably also love podcasts and audiobooks and wouldn’t mind a convenient way to listen to the piece while you’re commuting or working out or running errands.
We got you covered. We produced a new podcast version of the article, so just click on the audio player above or find it at Apple or Spotify.
For shorter pieces, I’ll read them myself, but reading 9,000 words flawlessly for audio is harder than you think, so we did this one with AI. Bill, as our robot friend is called, initially had some trouble with a few names and with large numbers, but his final version is pretty impressive. (Bill’s pronunciation of “dodecahedron of whores” is spot on.) Please report any kinks that you notice, and we’ll get them fixed.
There are not many publications left in America where you can do the kind of deep investigative journalism that we published this week. It was thrilling to report, write, and hit send on that article all here at our modest little Telos headquarters.
We want to do more.
But this kind of reporting is resource-intensive, both in terms of time and money. To be honest, “The Laptop of Secrets” piece was an experiment to see if Substack is a place that will support serious, long-form journalism. If you appreciate the article and want to read—and now listen to!—more of that kind of fearless coverage of the MAGA movement and the Trump administration, please consider upgrading to a paid subscription. That’s the only way we can keep this project alive.
Thank you!
